New Project Launch - CERTAIN

June marked the kick off of another exciting new Horizon Europe-funded project "CERTAIN", with over 25 project partners from research institutions, industry and regulatory stakeholders. The aim of CERTAIN is to further expand and validate the resilient, user-centric safety assurance framework for Connected and Cooperative Automated Mobility (CCAM) systems.
The University of Leeds is represented by Prof Oliver Carsten, Prof Gustav Markkula, Prof Natasha Merat, Dr Courtney Goodridge, Dr Ibrahim Ozturk and the software developers at Virtuocity, some of whom attended the launch event at IDIADA in Spain in June. Leeds is coordinating the work on defining and responding to stakeholder requirements, developing evaluation methods of user mental models for different levels of driving automation and methods for ensuring that the virtual human agent models used to test automated vehicles are sufficiently realistic.
'CERTAIN will create a comprehensive safety assurance framework for CCAM systems, prioritizing Safety, Trust, Acceptance, and Comfort (STAC) throughout the vehicle lifecycle and facilitating the swift integration of trustworthy AI-based (sub)systems. By ensuring that CCAM systems are designed to adapt to the cognitive complexity of human road users, this approach will foster user trust and acceptance, ultimately leading to increased market penetration.'
CERTAIN’s resilient, human-centric, and continuous safety assurance methodology for CCAM will enable “Scenario-based safety assurance of CCAM and related HMI in a dynamically evolving transport system.” To achieve this, the project will collaborate with key public and private stakeholders to align efforts, ensuring the longevity and usability of the project’s outputs.'
