Controllability for Automotive Safety Targets (CAST)

Funded Organisations: Jaguar Cars and the Motor Industry Software Reliability Association

2002-2003

The purpose of CAST was to investigate the relationship between vehicle-based system failures and the likelihood of that failure becoming an incident or accident. This work supported the definition of safety targets for vehicle-based systems.

LADS was been modified to simulate the performance of a Jaguar S-type. Scenarios have been created so assess the impact of failures to the Jaguar's engine management, active braking and steer-by-wire systems. For a population of drivers, the study sought to understand if and where the point of loss of control of these occurs, following the failure to one of the three systems in question.
